Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh reckons Royal Challengers Bengaluru could bring back Virat Kohli as captain for the next season of the IPL. Kohli had relinquished his RCB captaincy after the 2021 edition and since then Faf du Plessis has been leading the franchise.
The Turbanator feels Kohli’s aggressive brand of captaincy could guide RCB on the right track. Meanwhile, RCB got off to a slow start in the ongoing season, managing a solitary win in their first eight matches. However, they were able to turn the tides as they registered five wins on the bounce.
The three-time finalists will need to win their next match against the defending champions Chennai Super Kings to qualify for the playoffs. The former off-spinner wants franchise to back Virat Kohli as a leader if they don’t qualify for the playoffs this season.
“If they don’t qualify, they should look to get some Indian guy. Why not bring Virat Kohli back as captain,” Harbhajan Singh said in the latest episode of Star Sports Press Room on Monday, May 13.
Harbhajan Singh added, “As Dhoni has a lot of impact in Chennai, Virat Kohli is a big leader, he knows the kind of cricket they need to play. Now they are playing with a lot of aggression, lot of intent and that is what Virat Kohli brings. I would like to see Virat Kohli leading the side going forward.”
Kohli led RCB in 143 matches, leading them to 66 victories with a win-loss ratio of 0.94.
Harbhajan noted how MS Dhoni is still having a positive impact in Chennai Super Kings’ success. Bhajji recalled the match against MI, when Dhoni smashed Hardik Pandya for a hat-trick of sixes.
“I still believe that Dhoni has a lot of impact. The game at Wankhede he scored 20 odd runs and that was the difference in the end. What else do you need, his guidance, he delivers when it matters the most.”
Royal Challengers Bengaluru will play their last league stage match of the season against Chennai Super Kings at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Saturday.
