Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Deep Dasgupta has tipped Ravichandran Ashwin to finish his career as one of the greatest. Ashwin is regarded as one of the best spinners of the modern era and has bagged a total of 479 wickets in his glorious Test career of 93 matches.
The veteran off-spinner was at his absolute best in the first innings of the opening Test match against the West Indies at Windsor Park, Dominica. Ashwin returned with impressive figures of 5-60 and played a key role in skittling out the Windies for a paltry score of 150 runs.
This was the 33rd five-wicket haul for Ashwin in Test matches and he continued to deliver for the national team.
Deep Dasgupta said Ashwin would have been disappointed to miss out in the WTC Final against Australia but did a fine job against West Indies.
“The difference in the class of Ravichandran Ashwin the bowler, and the [West Indies] batters was evident. He would have been disappointed not to be a part of the final, but leaving the disappointment behind, he came and was a thorough professional and did what he does,” Deep Dasgupta told ESPNCricinfo.
It is well known that Ashwin has a lot of arrows in his quiver and he knows how to make the most of his repertoire.
“He [Ashwin] has so many varieties in his armory, but he also knows when to use it. It’s one thing to have these variations and it’s another thing that you know when to use it.
“He is undoubtedly among the modern-day greats and once he finishes his career, he will finish as one of the greatest ever.”
Ashwin has always ticked the right boxes for the Indian team and he has played a key role in the success of the side. The veteran off-spinner once again showed his class on the opening day’s play.
After the end of the second day’s play, India was 312-2, leading by a huge margin of 162 runs.
