Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra reckons Shubman Gill is going to be under pressure against Sri Lanka. Gill has not yet fired at all cylinders in the ongoing World Cup and he would aim to provide a good start to the team along with in-form Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.
Gill has scored 104 runs in four matches at an average of 26 and a strike rate of 94.54 in the ongoing World Cup. In fact, Gill has played second fiddle to skipper Rohit Sharma, who has taken the attack to the opposition from the get-go.
In fact, Gill has been in fantastic form in 2023 but he is yet to hit the top gear in the ongoing World Cup. Gill is the leading run-getter of 2023 as he has scored 1334 runs in 25 ODI matches at an average of 63.52 and a strike rate of 104.13, including six fifties and five centuries.
Aakash Chopra said while hosting JioCinema’s daily sports show ‘#AAKASHVANI, “If we are looking at anyone who is going to be under pressure against Sri Lanka, I’d say it’s Shubman Gill. That’s because he’s managed to play one good knock so far, but hasn’t done much of note besides that. So, India would be expecting that by the time the semifinals come around, every individual in the team is in top form.”
He added, “I hope that he scores a lot of runs at the Wankhede. Mumbai is a city of dreams which he has not managed to conquer yet. Even in the IPL, his record is not good at the Wankhede. So, he would like to improve this statistic, especially because India are likely to return to the Wankhede for the semifinals.”
It will be crucial for Shubman Gill to get the confidence under his belt before the knockout stages. Gill was unlucky to miss the opening two matches against Australia and Afghanistan due to dengue.
Sri Lanka has
opted to field first against India and Gill will have a great chance to get a big score against the Islanders.
