Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja believes spinners could be used in death overs as well in the Super 8 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup. The Super 8 stage will be played in the West Indies, where the pitches are expected to be conducive for the spinners.
Jadeja has gone wicketless in the three matches of the tournament and he is going to hold the key for the Indian team. The left-hander is yet to deliver with the bat and was dismissed for a golden duck in a crucial match against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Meanwhile, Axar Patel bowled the 17th over against Pakistan and conceded only two runs, which turned out to be a game-changing moment in New York.
India has quality spinners like Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in their squad.
Ravindra Jadeja said on Star Sports, “Whenever we play in the West Indies, the wicket remains a bit slow and dry. The match timing is also in the morning so spinners will have help. Even in India, there are many wickets where spinners get help. So it is a good thing that spinners will get help here in the middle overs. You could see spinners being used in the death overs as well.”
On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav concurred with Jadeja and said that the conditions will be helpful for the spinners. Yadav bagged 16 wickets in 11 IPL 2024 matches for Delhi Capitals and many experts reckon that he should be part of India’s playing XI.
Kuldeep said on Star Sports, “The spinners do get help in the West Indies and so I think four spinners are picked in the squad. In this format, the bowlers’ length becomes crucial and I have said this many times. I had played the T20I series against West Indies last year and it was a good series for the spinners so I expect similar pitches.”
India will begin their Super 8 campaign against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados on Thursday.
