In football, forwards hog the limelight just like the lead singer in a band. However, goalkeepers also play a crucial role in the success of their teams as they keep the opposition at bay. The custodians play an instrumental role in their team’s success with their agility and reflexes.
We take a look at the top three goalkeepers of the ISL 2023-24 season.
- Phurba Lachenpa: Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa got the Golden Glove award for 42 saves and keeping nine clean sheets (joint-most in the tournament) in 22 appearances for the club. Thus, he played a key role in taking the Islanders to glory. Lachenpa had a 71% save percentage and he conceded 17 goals in the season. The 26-year-old was like a solid wall in front of the sticks and did a fantastic job for Petr Kratky’s team. Lachenpa had a 63% passing accuracy.
- Amrinder Singh: Odisha FC’s Amrinder Singh did a fine job for the Kalinga Warriors in the ISL 2023-24 season. Singh had a save percentage of 77%, which was the best for any goalkeeper throughout the season. The 30-year-old made a total of 81 saves and kept nine clean sheets for the club in 24 appearances. Singh had an average of three saves per game. Like Lachenpa, Singh also had a 63% passing accuracy. Ergo, he played a key role in taking his team to the semifinals.
- Debjit Majumdar: Chennaiyin FC’s Debjit Majumder was brilliant in front of the goal for the club. The 36-year-old registered 66 saves in 19 appearances he made for the Marina Machans in the ISL 2023-24 season. Majumdar had a save percentage of 71 and had an average of three saves per game. But he had a poor passing accuracy of 49%. Majumdar was able to help Chennaiyin FC qualify for the playoffs as they finished in sixth place in the standings with eight wins in 22 matches.
