Arsenal have barely had time to celebrate their Premier League title before turning their attention to what comes next.
The Gunners know that reaching the top of English football is one challenge. Staying there while becoming a genuine force in Europe is another entirely.
That explains why Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta have moved quickly in the transfer market. Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement with Club Brugge for Christos Tzolis, with the Greek winger expected to complete his move to the Emirates in the coming days.
The transfer will reportedly cost around $46 million USD, with personal terms already agreed and only the final formalities remaining.
Tzolis arrives as part of a wider effort to inject fresh energy into a squad that delivered domestic success but still has ambitions of taking another step internationally.
His expected arrival also comes with a bittersweet element for supporters.
Leandro Trossard, one of Arsenal’s most reliable and committed players in recent seasons, is leaving for Besiktas. For some fans, the timing feels premature. For Arteta, however, the decision appears to be part of a calculated attempt to keep evolving rather than allowing success to create complacency.
Trossard’s contribution to Arsenal should not be underestimated.
The Belgian was rarely the loudest personality or biggest name in Arteta’s squad, but his professionalism and willingness to perform different roles made him extremely valuable. Whether starting matches or coming from the bench, he regularly provided intelligence, technical quality and important goals.
That is why some supporters have questioned whether moving him on at 31 was necessary, particularly after he helped the club finally end its long wait for another Premier League championship.
The decision, however, also reflects Arsenal’s changing priorities.
Arteta wants greater explosiveness and unpredictability on the left side of his attack. The club has been exploring several options in that position and initially showed interest in Juventus youngster Kenan Yildiz before being forced to consider alternatives.
Tzolis quickly emerged as a serious candidate.
At 24, he offers Arsenal a player entering the prime years of his career rather than approaching the final stages of them. He can attack defenders directly, contribute goals and create opportunities for teammates.
His recent numbers explain why the Gunners were interested.
The Greece international produced 22 goals and 29 assists across 51 appearances for Club Brugge last season, delivering an extraordinary level of productivity that included impressive performances in the Champions League.
Those numbers suggest Arsenal are not simply replacing Trossard.
They are changing the profile of the position.
