Benfica appear to be closing in on a long-pursued deal for Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, with fresh momentum building after an earlier rejection.
According to recent reports, the Portuguese club has relaunched its interest in the defensive midfielder following a failed approach in June.
At that time, Benfica’s proposal of a loan with an option to buy fell short of Bayern’s valuation, prompting the German side to rebuff the offer.
The landscape has shifted since then. Benfica is now understood to have tabled a more substantial package reportedly worth €15 million plus €5 million in add-ons, a figure that sits closer to what Bayern Munich are seeking.
Crucially, personal terms no longer represent an obstacle. Sources indicate that Palhinha views Benfica as his preferred destination should he depart Munich, and that agreeing on wages and contract details is relatively straightforward.
The presence of Patrick Dippel, Benfica’s German chief scout and a former Bayern Munich analyst, could further smooth negotiations.
Dippel has already played a pivotal role in several of the Lisbon club’s recent transfer successes and is well-positioned to leverage existing relationships at his former employer.
An exit from the Allianz Arena makes clear footballing sense for the 30-year-old. Under head coach Vincent Kompany, Palhinha has found himself without a regular role in the squad, which has limited his opportunities and raised questions about his long-term future in Bavaria.
A return to Portugal would allow the experienced midfielder to restart his career in familiar surroundings and compete for silverware with one of the country’s traditional powerhouses.
Should Benfica succeed in convincing Bayern to accept the improved offer, Palhinha is expected to pack his bags and head home for the 2026/27 campaign.
The deal, if completed, would represent a significant statement of intent from the Eagles as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.
Negotiations remain ongoing, but the renewed seriousness of Benfica’s approach has markedly improved the prospects of a transfer materializing.
