Indian Super League outfit Bengaluru FC have announced on Wednesday that they have signed a two year contract extension with young Indian midfielder Suresh Wangjam. The fresh extension will see the young midfielder stay at the club till 2023-24.
This is the second contract extension for the Blues after they tied down a new deal with captain Sunil Chhetri as well. They are desperate to hold onto the core of the team and Suresh was one of their standout performers along with Chhetri in the last campaign. Bengaluru FC had their worst league season last time out and they will look to comeback stronger in the upcoming season.
Suresh joined the Blues in 2019 after representing India in the U-17 World Cup back in 2017. He was also a part of the AIFF Elite Academy and was battle-hardened during his time at Indian Arrows in the I-League. Suresh after joining Bengaluru FC had a brief stay with the Reserves before making his Indian Super League debut in that season itself.
In a few seasons, Suresh has already made a name for himself and is a regular starter for Bengaluru FC. His ability to progress the ball and the energy that he brings to the midfield has also impressed the Indian national team head coach Igor Stimac. Hence he has made his way to the national team and featured in the recent FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers which were held in Qatar.
“I’m really happy to commit my future to Bengaluru FC. I came here two years ago, and I have improved tremendously as a player because of my teammates and the staff I have around me. I have so much more to learn and feel this is the best place for me to be able to do that. I also get a lot of love and appreciation from our supporters and I really want to do well for them. It was an easy decision for me to sign on,” said Suresh Wangjam.
The Blues management are also very delighted with Suresh signing a new contract with them. They feel that he is a player who can go on to achieve big things in Indian football.
“Suresh has grown immensely as a player and a person since we first signed him and we were always keen on keeping him at this club. He has a bright future ahead of him, and we are glad that he will spend the next stage of his development with us. Suresh is one of the few players from the U17 squad at the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup who have become a consistent feature in the senior national team, and that reaffirms our belief in youth and the success of our player development pathway,” said club CEO Mandar Tamhane.
