Bengaluru FC have made a resounding statement in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25, dominating the league with 17 points from eight matches. Under the guidance of head coach Gerard Zaragoza, the Blues have secured five wins, two draws, and suffered just one loss, putting them atop the standings at the second international break.
The team’s defensive solidity has been a cornerstone of their success, as they have conceded the fewest goals (6) in the league while maintaining the best goal difference (+7). This remarkable turnaround follows a forgettable 2023-24 season where they finished 10th.
The resurgence began with a recruitment overhaul in January, with Indian internationals Chinglensana Singh and Nikhil Poojary joining the squad. Their efforts were bolstered over the summer with high-profile signings such as Rahul Bheke, Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Alberto Noguera, and Edgar Mendez.
Zaragoza emphasized the importance of these additions, saying, “We did good recruitment, getting exactly the players we wanted to sign. For a coach, that’s amazing. The sporting director, owner, and everyone concerned is doing their job.”
The current squad features some seasoned campaigners and new faces. Club veterans like Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Bheke, all key members of Bengaluru’s 2018-19 title-winning side, have played crucial roles. Meanwhile, new arrivals such as Mendez (three goals, two assists) and Ryan Williams have made vital contributions, helping Bengaluru clinch crucial points.
Zaragoza, who was the assistant coach during the club’s maiden ISL triumph, is keen to replicate that success. “It was amazing to be the assistant coach in 2018-19 when we were champions. I consider myself to be a more attacking coach. Back then, we worked more on defensive structures, and I learned a lot from Cuadrat,” he said.
The transformation under Zaragoza has been methodical, as the team has adopted his philosophy and showcased gradual improvement week after week. With eight matches still to play, the Blues are well-positioned to push for their second ISL title.
As Bengaluru FC prepare to return to action post-break, their remarkable form and cohesion make them the team to beat this season. The next challenge will test whether they can sustain their momentum and reclaim their place as ISL champions.
