Bruno Fernandes Laments Botched Saudi Move

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed he was left hurt by the club’s stance during strong interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal last summer.
The Portugal international said it was painful to feel that United would have been willing to let him leave had he chosen to accept the lucrative proposal.
Al-Hilal were reportedly prepared to offer around £100m for the 31-year-old, alongside wages of up to £700,000 per week, which would have more than doubled his salary.
Fernandes, who is under contract at Old Trafford until 2027 with an option for a further year, ultimately turned down the move in order to remain with United.
Speaking in an interview with Portuguese broadcaster Canal 11, Fernandes reflected on the episode and suggested the club did not strongly oppose his potential departure.
He explained that the situation made him sad, despite his belief that his commitment, availability, and performances for the team have been beyond question since joining the club.
Fernandes acknowledged that a move to Saudi Arabia would have brought financial rewards and a strong chance of immediate success, but said his decision to stay was driven by family considerations and a genuine affection for Manchester United.
He reiterated that he still wants to compete at the highest level of the game.
The midfielder joined United from Sporting in January 2020 for £47m and has since become one of the club’s most influential players.
He has made 307 appearances, scoring 103 goals and registering 93 assists, while this season he has contributed five goals and seven assists in the Premier League.
Despite Fernandes’ comments, sources have indicated that Manchester United have no desire to sell their captain and view him as central to their long-term plans.
The club maintain that he remains a key figure under head coach Ruben Amorim, who was instrumental in persuading him to stay at Old Trafford.
