Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes wants the club to find success in the upcoming season of the Premier League. The Portuguese midfielder said he would put his personal plaudits on the backburner ahead of the team’s success.
The 30-year-old was one of Manchester United’s best performers in the previous season, scoring eight goals and providing 10 assists in 36 Premier League appearances. Overall, Fernandes scored 19 goals in all competitions.
Meanwhile, United had a horrible run in the previous season, finishing in 15th place in the Premier League standings. The Old Trafford-based club could only manage 11 wins out of the 38 matches.
United played nine draws and suffered 18 losses and could only aggregate 42 points, which is their worst ever season in the last 50 years.
“I hope you’ll hear less about Bruno this year, but a lot more about United,” Fernandes said in an interview with ESPN Brasil.
“That’s my main objective because my name being spoken, let’s say vaguely alone, It doesn’t fill me with pride or anything.
“United being talked about, being positive, that’s the most important thing and that’s what I want for this season.
“If it happens that Bruno has to score fewer goals, provide fewer assists, or do another type of provision of what is necessary for the games, I would be very happy.”
Fernandes is looking forward to the new season, and he is hopeful that this time they will be able to do something special at the club after a disappointing run in the last few seasons.
“Every year that I stayed here, every time the season begins, I see this [positivity],” Fernandes said.
“I believe that it could be a time of change, where we can do something better.
“Probably my first two seasons were very good, where we really believed that we could go further and do better things. We had a very good season with Erik [Ten Hag] in his first season, then in the second season it wasn’t so good.
“Obviously, now people have joined the club, not just the players, but also staff and management, who have a different vision.
“I hope that all these changes and everything that we have done can bring the club back to the place where it really deserves to be.”
United will begin their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on Sunday at Old Trafford.
