Chennaiyin FC has made a significant move to strengthen its defence ahead of the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season, securing the return of right-back Laldinliana Renthlei. The club officially announced the signing of the 26-year-old Mizoram native on Thursday.
Renthlei, who previously played for Chennaiyin FC from 2018 to 2020, is back after stints with Jamshedpur FC and, most recently, Odisha FC.
Renthlei’s first spell at Chennaiyin FC was very successful, as he played a pivotal role in the team’s impressive run to the final of the 2019-20 ISL season, where they ultimately finished as runners-up. His return to the Chennai-based club makes him the 13th signing of the summer transfer window, joining fellow defenders Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, Mandar Rao Desai, and PC Laldinpuia.
Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle, who previously worked with Renthlei during the club’s 2019-20 ISL campaign, expressed his enthusiasm at reuniting with the defender. Coyle spoke highly of Renthlei’s abilities and experience, noting the impact he had during their previous collaboration.
“I’m absolutely delighted to bring Dinliana back to the club,” Coyle said. “I worked with him during season six when we reached the ISL final, and he was an outstanding full-back. He also came with me to Jamshedpur, where we won the Shield. He’s a fantastic defender and a tremendous addition to the squad. Dinliana has already been a champion in India, and that’s the type of pedigree and profile we want at the club.”
Coyle further emphasized that Renthlei’s experience, despite his relatively young age, will be invaluable both on and off the pitch. “He brings great experience and will be a wonderful presence,” the coach added, underscoring Renthlei’s importance as Chennaiyin FC aims to climb back to the top of the ISL.
For his part, Renthlei expressed his excitement about rejoining Chennaiyin FC, citing the club’s winning spirit and strong fan base as key factors in his decision to return. He also highlighted his positive relationship with Owen Coyle as another reason for his comeback.
“Joining Chennaiyin FC again is very important for me, and I’m excited to give my best for this amazing club,” Renthlei said. “The goal this season is clear – work hard, stay focused, and push ourselves to win the ISL. I chose Chennaiyin because of its winning spirit, the incredible fans, and coach Owen, who I have worked with in the past and has shown faith in me by getting me to the club once again. Together, we’ll aim high.”
Renthlei’s addition is expected to strengthen Chennaiyin’s defence, as the team looks to bounce back from a challenging 2023-24 campaign. His versatility as a right-back and his previous experience with the club make him a valuable asset in their push for silverware.
After his initial stint with Chennaiyin FC, Renthlei moved to Jamshedpur FC in September 2020, where he played a crucial role, making 57 appearances across all competitions. Under Coyle’s management at Jamshedpur, Renthlei further solidified his reputation as a reliable and dynamic full-back, helping the club win the ISL League Winners’ Shield during the 2021-22 season.
Ahead of the 2023-24 ISL season, Renthlei signed with Odisha FC, where he made six appearances, including two in continental competitions. Despite his short spell with Odisha, the defender’s performances were enough to attract attention, leading to his return to Chennaiyin FC.
Renthlei’s signing is part of Chennaiyin FC’s broader efforts to rebuild and strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming ISL season. With 13 new additions to the team, the club is focused on enhancing its defensive solidity while maintaining its competitive edge.
As Chennaiyin FC prepares for the challenges ahead, the club’s supporters will be eager to see how Renthlei’s return can help propel them back into title contention.
