Chennaiyin FC have strengthened their midfield ahead of the 2025–26 campaign by signing experienced defensive midfielder Mohammed Ali Bemammer on a free transfer. The club confirmed the move on Thursday as preparations continue for the upcoming Indian Super League season.
The move marks Bemammer’s second stint in the ISL. The 36-year-old previously spent two seasons with NorthEast United, where he played a key role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. During his time there, he helped NorthEast United lift their maiden trophy, the Durand Cup, in 2024.
Across two seasons, Bemammer featured in 56 matches for the Highlanders, contributing five goals and four assists from his holding midfield role. Known for his calm presence and ability to read the game, he was a regular starter and an important figure in the dressing room.
For Chennaiyin FC, popularly known as the Marina Machans, Bemammer becomes the second foreign signing ahead of the new season. Earlier this week, the club added Spanish midfielder Alberto Noguera, formerly of Mumbai City and FC Goa, as part of their squad rebuild.
Bemammer began his professional journey after rising through the youth ranks of Moroccan top-flight side Maghreb of Fez. With the club, he enjoyed major success, winning the CAF Confederation Cup, the Moroccan Throne Cup, and the CAF Super Cup. On the international stage, he represented the Morocco national football team at the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021 and also won the African Nations Championship the same year.
Chennaiyin FC head coach Clifford Miranda spoke highly of the new signing, highlighting his tactical importance. “Bemammer’s will help us to get solidarity and stability in the middle. His ability to hold the ball under pressure, break opponent attacks and find passes to initiate offensive transitions will add a very good dimension to our play,” Miranda said.
“He brings leadership and character to our squad, and has a strong personality which will help the team,” he added.
With Bemammer’s experience and leadership, Chennaiyin FC will hope to add control and balance to their midfield as they aim for a strong ISL 2025–26 campaign.
