Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo said his team’s World Cup is far from over despite the team’s poor start to their campaign. Roberto Martinez’s team registered a 1-1 draw against DR Congo after they could not bring their best to the pitch.
Ronaldo’s place in the team has also been questioned by a lot of experts after he could not grab his limited chances in front of the goal. After Joao Neves scored the opening goal for Portugal in the fifth minute, the team could not carry the impetus forward and Congo was able to capitalise as Yoane Wissa scored from a header at the stroke of half time.
Portugal dominated the possession but surprisingly could only manage a solitary shot on target.
“Nothing was lacking,” Ronaldo, 41, told reporters after the game. “That’s football. Portugal could have won, but they could also have lost.”
Ronaldo took three shots at the goal but all of three of them were off-target.
“It wasn’t the start we wanted, but this is far from over,” Ronaldo, who hasn’t scored a non-penalty goal in a major international competition since June 19, 2021, wrote on Instagram.
“Heads up and focus on the next game.”
On the other hand, Ronaldo’s Al Nassr teammate, João Félix, was not surprised by Congo DR’s inspiring performance as the African country secured its first-ever World Cup point.
“The first game is always the first game,” João Félix said. “Even if it’s against a weaker team, they are playing for their country. If it’s a dream for us, it’s a dream for them too. They always give a little extra.”
Felix, is however, optimistic that Portugal will make a strong comeback.
“We will definitely improve,” João Félix said. “It’s about seeing what we didn’t do well and correcting it in the next game, so we can win.”
Portugal will next play Uzbekistan on Tuesday in Houston before facing Colombia in their Group K final game on June 27.
