England’s midfielder Declan Rice said his team is unfazed by the Mexico challenge and shrugged off any fears about playing at the Azteca. The Three Lions will need to adjust to the conditions in Mexico City as the match would be played 2000 meters above sea level.
Meanwhile, England registered a thrilling 2-1 win against Congo DR in the round of 32. After conceding early in the seventh minute, England’s skipper Harry Kane scored a brace, finding the back of the net in the 75th and 86th minute.
On the other hand, Mexico secured a 2-0 win against Ecuador in the round of 32. In the group stage, Mexico won all three of their games against South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia.
“It’s kind of going to be like an away game for us,” England midfielder Rice said.
“They’ve played every game in Mexico so far, been at home the whole tournament, so for us it’s just being able to go there and deal with what’s going to be thrown at us.”
Meanwhile, Mexico has lost only two of their 89 competitive matches while playing at the Azteca, and thus England will have a massive challenge up their sleeves. Rice said it doesn’t matter to them where they play and they would look to bring their best to the pitch.
“For us, we don’t care where we play,” the England midfielder told Lions’ Den. “To us, it’s just a stadium.
“Obviously, the Azteca is known as where Maradona done the ‘Hand of God’, like just loads of different iconic moments. For us, we’re just turning up to do a job.
“Obviously it’s going to be unreal, but it’s just another stadium we get to play at.”
England will take on Mexico on Sunday.
