The latest Kolkata derby between East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant delivered high drama, fierce rivalry and a title race that now heads into the final matchday after the two sides played out a tense 1-1 draw at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Sunday.
For years, the fixture had largely belonged to Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League, with the Mariners dominating the rivalry. But this encounter carried far greater stakes, with both Kolkata giants entering the clash level at the summit of the standings.
Mohun Bagan began aggressively, controlling possession early through an attacking quartet of Sahal Abdul Samad, Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco and Jamie Maclaren. The pressure forced East Bengal deep into its own half, often defending with six players behind the ball to absorb repeated attacks in the opening exchanges.
Despite Bagan’s bright start, East Bengal soon found opportunities on the counter. A long kick from goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill exposed Bagan’s high defensive line and nearly released Vishnu into space, though goalkeeper Vishal Kaith reacted quickly to smother the danger.
The home supporters were lifted further when Anton Sojberg came agonisingly close to opening the scoring after winning possession high up the pitch. His left-footed strike beat Kaith but crashed against the woodwork, leaving East Bengal fans stunned. Minutes later, another promising move involving Bipin Singh and Sojberg broke down as frustration grew inside the packed stadium.
Bagan also created chances before halftime, with Anirudh Thapa testing Gill with a powerful half-volley that the goalkeeper kept out with an excellent save.
After a goalless first half, Mohun Bagan coach Sergio Lobera made bold attacking substitutions in the closing stages, introducing Jason Cummings, Robson Robinho and Dimitrios Petratos. The tactical reshuffle, however, forced defensive adjustments that later proved costly.
With six minutes remaining, Edmund Lalrindika broke the deadlock after receiving a pass from Miguel Figueira. The forward beat Mehtab Singh before calmly finishing past Kaith, sparking wild celebrations among East Bengal supporters and coaching staff.
But the drama was not over.
Five minutes later, Jason Cummings rose highest from a corner to head home the equaliser for Mohun Bagan, silencing the red-and-gold sections of the crowd.
Maclaren nearly snatched victory deep into stoppage time, but Gill produced another crucial save to preserve the draw.
The result leaves both sides level on points, though East Bengal remain top due to a superior goal difference. The title race will now be decided on the final matchday on May 21, with East Bengal facing Inter Kashi and Mohun Bagan taking on Sporting Club Delhi.
