In a surprising development just days before the Super Cup, Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Goa and Albanian striker Armando Sadiku have decided to part ways by mutual consent. The club confirmed the move on Monday, signaling the end of Sadiku’s one-season stint in Indian football.
The 32-year-old forward, who joined the Gaurs last summer, delivered an eventful campaign, finishing with 10 goals and two assists. His contributions were vital in FC Goa’s successful league stage run, where they finished second and advanced to the semifinals of the ISL playoffs.
Sadiku also scored in the second leg of the semifinal clash against Bengaluru FC on April 6, but Goa ultimately bowed out on aggregate.
Despite his promising start — where he netted eight goals in his first seven appearances — Sadiku’s form took a downturn. Over the next 17 matches, he scored just two goals, with his on-field presence also fading. The Albanian started only six times in his final 15 appearances for the club.
In a statement, FC Goa acknowledged Sadiku’s contribution: “We thank Armando Sadiku for his efforts and professionalism during his time with the club. He played a significant role in our season and leaves with our best wishes.”
The timing of the departure is notable, with the Super Cup set to begin on April 20 in Bhubaneswar. FC Goa will now have to adapt quickly as they prepare for their Round-of-16 fixture against I-League outfit Gokulam Kerala on April 21.
Sadiku’s exit leaves a gap in the team’s attacking arsenal, and it remains to be seen how head coach Manolo Márquez plans to reconfigure his forward line in such a short span. The Gaurs, who were eyeing a strong Super Cup run following a commendable ISL season, must now recalibrate without one of their key offensive weapons.
As for Sadiku, the next step in his career remains uncertain, but after a mixed spell in India, the experienced striker will be looking to reignite his form elsewhere.
