Former Albania international and Mohun Bagan Super Giant striker Armando Sadiku has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career that lasted more than a decade.
The experienced forward confirmed his decision on Wednesday through an emotional message on Instagram, expressing his gratitude towards the sport that shaped his career.
“Thank you, football! I will miss you,” Sadiku wrote on Instagram.
Sadiku, who represented Albania in 38 international matches and scored 12 goals, enjoyed a memorable career at both club and international levels. He also made a significant impact during his time in Indian football, representing Mohun Bagan Super Giant and FC Goa.
The Albanian striker joined Mohun Bagan for the 2023-24 season and played an important role in the Kolkata-based club’s successful campaign. During his spell with the Mariners, he helped the team secure the Durand Cup and the Indian Super League (ISL) Shield.
Following his departure from Mohun Bagan, Sadiku moved to FC Goa, where he added another trophy to his collection by winning the Bandodkar Trophy in 2024.
Across his spells with the two Indian clubs, the forward registered 21 goals and three assists, leaving a notable mark on Indian football.
Mohun Bagan also paid tribute to their former striker following his retirement announcement.
“Thank you for the memories, Sadiku. Wishing you the best for what lies ahead,” the club wrote on social media.
Beyond his achievements in India, Sadiku will be remembered for one of the most significant moments in Albania’s football history.
During the 2016 European Championship in France, the striker scored the decisive goal against Romania, helping Albania register its first and only victory in the tournament during the country’s maiden appearance.
That historic strike established Sadiku as a memorable figure in Albanian football and remains one of the defining moments of his international career.
After leaving FC Goa, Sadiku joined Swiss outfit AC Bellinzona last season, which has now become the final destination of his playing career.
However, the former Albania international will not be leaving football entirely. He is set to begin a new chapter as the sporting director of AC Bellinzona, moving from the pitch into a management role.
With his retirement confirmed, Sadiku closes his playing career with international recognition, memorable goals and multiple trophies, while preparing to continue his association with the sport in a different capacity.
