Harry Kane has completed one of football’s most remarkable journeys after winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English player to receive the prestigious award since Michael Owen in 2001.
The Bayern Munich striker was crowned the world’s best male footballer at the ceremony in London on October 26, finishing ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. His achievement represents the latest chapter in a career defined by persistence, setbacks and an extraordinary ability to score goals.
Kane’s journey began with rejection. At just eight years old, he was released by Arsenal’s youth academy after the club questioned his physical attributes and athleticism.
Former Arsenal academy director Liam Brady acknowledged the mistake years later, explaining that Kane had been considered overweight and insufficiently athletic. However, Brady also recognized the determination that eventually helped the striker establish himself among football’s elite.
Kane subsequently joined Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, but his path to becoming a Premier League superstar was far from straightforward.
He experienced four loan spells during his development, representing Leyton Orient in League One, Millwall in the Championship, Norwich City in the Premier League and Leicester City in the Championship.
Those experiences helped prepare him for the demands of professional football before he finally established himself in Tottenham’s first team.
Kane eventually became Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Jimmy Greaves and finishing his career with the London club with 280 Premier League goals. He also became England’s all-time leading scorer, cementing his place among the country’s greatest footballers.
However, despite his individual achievements, team silverware remained elusive throughout his years in England.
His decision to join Bayern Munich in 2023 offered an opportunity to compete for major trophies, although his first season in Germany ended without silverware.
That wait finally ended in 2025, when Kane won the Bundesliga title at 31 years old, securing the first major team trophy of his professional career.
His success continued during the 2025/26 campaign, when Kane scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and England. He helped the German club retain its Bundesliga championship, win the DFB-Pokal and capture the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
Kane also scored 14 goals in the Champions League as Bayern reached the semifinals. His performances earned him another Bundesliga scoring title and the Ballon d’Or, along with the award for the year’s best male striker.
At 33, Kane has finally received football’s most prestigious individual recognition, 25 years after the last English winner.
His transformation from an eight-year-old rejected by Arsenal to a Ballon d’Or winner illustrates the importance of perseverance throughout his career.
More than two decades after that early setback, Kane has established himself as one of the greatest English strikers in history, combining exceptional finishing, intelligent movement, creativity and leadership.
The player once considered insufficiently athletic by Arsenal has become the world’s best male footballer in 2026, completing a remarkable journey from childhood rejection to the pinnacle of international football.
