FC Goa captain Brandon Fernandes has revealed he wants to win the Indian Super League trophy for his late father, Joaquim Joao Fernandes. Fernandes’ father recently took his last breath after suffering a heart attack back in April 2023.
Fernandes was taking part in the Super Cup for the Gaurs in Kerala when he heard the news of his father’s demise and his world came falling apart. Joao Fernandes always played a key role in his son’s journey to the top level of Indian football and always motivated him to rise through the ranks.
The attacking midfielder scored three goals and provided as many assists in the 2022-23 ISL season for FC Goa.
“My father played different roles in my life; he was a friend to me, my guide, like a good father always available whenever we needed him. His loss is heartbreaking. I know he will watch me from up there,” Brandon said in an interaction with The Times of India.
Fernandes revealed his father always motivated him to give his best on the field in order to get the desired results.
“He has played a lovely role in my life. He always told me, no matter what, you have to give your best (on the field). I have to do everything in my power to achieve more things till the end of my career,” he said.
The 28-year-old from Margao revealed he wants to win the ISL trophy with FC Goa and it is his father’s dream, which he wants to fulfill.
“My father always wanted me to win the ISL trophy. Even individual prizes he appreciated, but most important for him was winning the ISL trophy. Being captain of FC Goa last year, he told me ‘Win the ISL for Goa, Goa has not won the trophy’. I want to do it for my father. This season is dedicated to him. He is the reason I am where I am,” Brandon stated.
Meanwhile, Brandon Fernandes took the field after almost four months in the team’s opening Durand Cup match against Shillong Lajong FC. The Gaurs registered a convincing 6-0 scoreline at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.
