India’s commanding 3-0 victory over the Maldives in an international friendly was a much-needed boost for the Blue Tigers, ending a 489-day winless streak. However, the celebration was short-lived as key midfielder Brandon Fernandes suffered a knee injury, ruling him out of the crucial upcoming match against Bangladesh.
The 30-year-old from Margao has long been a vital cog in India’s midfield, and his influence was on full display before he was forced off in the 37th minute. Replaced by Farukh Choudhary, Fernandes’ absence is a significant blow to head coach Manolo Marquez, who is already managing without first-team regulars Lallianzuala Chhangte, Manvir Singh, and Ashish Rai due to injuries.
Speaking post-match, Marquez acknowledged the seriousness of the setback. “We’ll need to bring in a replacement for Brandon. It’s unfortunate, especially considering the importance of the next game,” he said.
As India prepares for the face-off with Bangladesh, attention has turned to possible replacements in the number 10 role. One promising option is Naorem Mahesh Singh, who impressed against the Maldives with his aggressive play and creativity. Mahesh was a constant threat, creating chances for both himself and his teammates. While his current club form with East Bengal has been inconsistent—registering two goals and one assist in 20 appearances—his versatility and flair make him a strong candidate.
“Mahesh has the dribbling ability and off-the-ball movement that can unsettle defenses,” noted a source close to the team. “He’s not quite at Brandon’s level in terms of set-pieces, but he brings his own qualities.”
Another option could be Anirudh Thapa, a seasoned international who was recently dropped from the squad due to form and injury concerns. Despite a tough season with limited minutes at club level—15 matches and two assists—Thapa’s experience and athleticism could be invaluable.
“Thapa has the vision and delivery that can still unlock defenses,” said a former teammate. “He might not score often, but his composure in big games is something the team could rely on.”
With Bangladesh up next, India must act swiftly to adjust their midfield dynamic. While the loss of Fernandes is a major blow, the emergence of players like Mahesh and the potential return of Thapa provide Marquez with options. The question now is whether they can step up and fill the creative void left by one of India’s most dependable playmakers.
