FC Goa has named Brandon Fernandes as the skipper of the team for the upcoming edition of the Hero Indian Super League 2022-23. The Indian International will lead a 4-man captaincy group that comprises Seriton Fernandes, Glan Martins, and Marc Valiente.
FC Goa had signed Brandon in the Hero ISL 2016 draft with their pick in the sixth round. Since then, Fernandes has been at the Gaurs and has played a key role in the success of the team.
In fact, Brandon Fernandes scored the winning goal for FC Goa in the final of the Hero Super Cup against Chennaiyin FC in 2019. Ergo, he had played a huge role in taking his team to their first-ever title.
Meanwhile, Fernandes has provided 19 assists in 71 Hero ISL matches, which is the most for any Indian player in the tournament. He has also scored five goals in the competition so far.
The attacking midfielder has played 69 matches for the Gaurs and he has been a consistent performer for the club.
Brandon said after being appointed as the captain of the team, “It’s an honour to lead my home club in the Hero ISL. Additionally, it’s also a privilege that I have the trust of my teammates. I enjoyed the responsibilities I had as part of the captaincy group last season. And now, I’m looking forward to the challenges as we head into the new season.”
“We have a great bunch of players who are all working towards the same goal — which is to bring success to the club. I’m excited to lead them and eager to explore what we can do together on the pitch this coming season.”
On the other hand, FC Goa head coach Carlos Pena is delighted for Brandon Fernandes and congratulated the player on his appointment.
“I’m very happy for Brandon because he has the credit of his teammates, people working in the club and all the fans. He’s a good example of loyalty and commitment and is a wonderful individual both on and off the pitch. With his experience and skill-set, all the players in the squad can look to learn from him and develop as a team,” he said.
The Spaniard also opened on the leadership roles of Seriton Fernandes, Glan Martins, and Marc Valiente.
“Each of them has the ability to lead the team, which is why they have also been selected for the leadership group. I wanted a few captains and not just one, because it facilitates the sharing of opinions and encourages collective thinking,” Pena explained.
