ISL 2022-23: Hero ISL is a tough league and I love to test myself in uncomfortable environments – Matt Derbyshire

NorthEast United’s attacker Matt Derbyshire believes Hero ISL is a tough league and he likes to challenge himself in uncomfortable environments. Matt Derbyshire started his football journey with Great Harwood Town. Subsequently, he went on to ply his trade at clubs like Darwen FC, Blackburn Rovers, Wrexham, Olympiacos, and Birmingham City FC.

Derbyshire also two Golden Boots awards for Omonia Nikosia of Cyprus. He won the English League Cup while playing for Birmingham City FC. Derbyshire also played for the England U-21 team and played a key role in the success of the team UEFA U-21 championships.

Reflecting on the factors which convinced him to join the Highlanders, Derbyshire said while talking to the official website of the Hero ISL, “I’ve traveled across the world. Australia, Greece, Cyprus, and England. I felt I fancy something different. I heard a lot of good things about NorthEast United FC, so I jumped on the chance.”

The 36-year-old veteran believes the young players at the club have a lot of talent and he will be looking to guide them on the right track.

He added, “There are some great boys around. As a team, we have a lot to learn but that’s why we are here in pre-season to thrash things out. I am looking forward to working with these boys every day and try and help them, give them a bit of my experience of the game.”

Derbyshire feels the Indian Super League is a tough league with great competition among the 11 teams and he will be looking to give his best.

The Englishman said, “I knew a few friends that have played in the Hero ISL before. It is not an easy league, it’s a tough league, especially the weather conditions. India is very humid but I’m looking forward to playing in it, I am looking forward to the season and see what it brings.”

On the other hand, NorthEast United FC had a disappointing previous season in the tournament as they could only manage three wins in 20 league stage matches.

They finished at 10th place after only bagging 14 points and the club will be determined to turn the tables in the ninth edition of the Hero ISL. Thus, the Highlanders will be determined to turn the tables in the upcoming season of the tournament.

Speaking on the same, “It’s always difficult (to lift the players). Last season was very difficult for the club but this season I’m sure with the experience of players that we have brought in is going to be good for the team and hopefully we can push up the table.”

NorthEast United FC will begin their campaign against Bengaluru FC at the Shree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru on the 8th of October.
