Chennaiyin FC’s long wait for a home win against FC Goa in the Indian Super League continued on Sunday, as a late equaliser secured a 1-1 draw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Just when the hosts seemed set to end a drought stretching back to February 2020, Sandesh Jhingan’s towering header in the 86th minute salvaged a point for the visitors.
The breakthrough came shortly after the restart, following a costly error from Goa’s midfield. Sahil Tavora’s under-hit back pass rolled straight into the path of substitute Irfan Yadwad, who kept his composure to slot home and hand Chennaiyin the lead. It was a moment that injected belief into the home side, which had shown flashes of promise but lacked conviction earlier in the match.
Chennaiyin’s defensive unit remained disciplined for much of the game, with Eduardo Kau partnering Pritam Kotal at the back and Elsinho Dias dropping deeper to help maintain structure. This setup effectively contained Goa’s attacking threats, including Dejan Drazic, Udanta Singh and Brison Fernandes, who struggled to convert their moments into clear chances.
The opening half saw Chennaiyin gradually grow into the contest after a tentative start. Their best opportunity came through Maheson Singh, who latched onto a clever back-heel from Chima Chukwu, only to see his effort glance the outside of the post. Chukwu, making his first start of the season, was later forced off with an injury, adding to Chennaiyin’s concerns.
Goa, meanwhile, relied heavily on Drazic’s creativity. The Serbian forward attempted to catch the defence off guard with quick free kicks and continued to drive attacks, but lacked finishing support from his teammates. As the game wore on, Goa increased pressure, while Chennaiyin began to retreat deeper, conceding unnecessary fouls.
The equaliser arrived late but was well-crafted. After Chennaiyin failed to capitalize on a corner, Goa launched a swift counterattack. Drazic’s forward run earned a set piece, and from the resulting corner, Jhingan rose above the defence to head home decisively.
The result leaves Chennaiyin frustrated, especially after coming so close to ending their winless home run against Goa. Injuries to key players, including Chukwu and Elsinho, further dampened the mood ahead of the international break.
Before kickoff, the club paid tribute to late fan group founder Joshua Peters. In a heartfelt moment, his family was honored on the pitch, while supporters displayed a banner reading “Chennaiyin forever,” ensuring his legacy remained part of the evening.
