Kerala Blasters have been keen on holding onto their Indian domestic players as they have extended the contract with local defender Bijoy Varghese. The youngster has signed a contract that will keep him at the club till the 2025. The youngster will also be donning the legendary 21 jersey that they retired after Sandesh Jhingan’s departure.
Bijoy, who hails from Kerala, was always passionate about football. He joined the youth team of Kovalam FC. In 2018, he featured in the finals of the Interntional School Championships and also won the best defender in the tourament. He then went on to play for the Sports Authority of India that particiapted in the youth league.
Last year Bijoy became the part of the Kerala Blasters’ reserve team and was part of the Kerala Premier League. His consistent performances caught the eye of Ivan Vukomanovic. The Serbian tactician immediately called him to the senior team. Soon he became an integral part of the squad. He made his debut during the Durand Cup and his constant improvement saw him feature in the Indian Super League.
“‘I am really excited that I am going to be a part of Kerala Blasters for a long time. I am really happy to be working under Coach Ivan and intend to work harder, get better at my game and sharpen my skills. I hope to give all the club’s passionate fans memories by giving my 100 percent in all the games that I play,” said the 22-year-old after signing the contract.

Varghese, who featured in five Indian Super League matches this season and had a decent passing percentage of 72.57% and in that limited period he made 23 clearances and as many as eight blocks, proving his credentials as a great young defender.
