Mohun Bagan Super Giant are set to strengthen their attacking options with Scottish striker Lee Erwin scheduled to arrive in the city on Monday night. The new signing is expected to join his teammates for training from Tuesday as he begins preparations for his first stint in Indian football.
The 32-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Mariners and will add experience and physical presence to head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis’ forward line. Standing 6-foot-2, Erwin is a strong presence inside the penalty area and can also pose a significant threat from set pieces.
Known for his clinical finishing and ability to score opening goals, Erwin arrives at Mohun Bagan after playing for Jordanian side Al-Faisaly last season. The former Scotland youth international has built up considerable experience during a career that has taken him across Europe and Asia.
Erwin has represented several recognised clubs, including Motherwell, Leeds United, Bury FC and Tractor FC. His experience in different footballing environments could provide the Mariners with another valuable attacking option.
The Scottish forward said Mohun Bagan’s stature, history and passionate fan base played an important role in convincing him to choose the green-and-maroon club despite interest from elsewhere in the Indian Super League.
“I will be playing in India for the first time. I had offers from quite a few ISL clubs, but Mohun Bagan is the biggest club in the country, so I accepted their offer and decided to come here. My Scottish friends who have played in India have spoken highly of Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s professionalism and philosophy, saying they can match any club in world football. Apart from that, very few clubs can rival Mohun Bagan’s success and rich tradition. The passion, support, and love that the members and supporters have for this club were also among the main reasons behind my decision to wear the green-and-maroon jersey,” Erwin said.
With his arrival, Dilmperis will have another experienced striker available as he shapes his attacking unit. Erwin’s combination of height, finishing ability and experience could give Mohun Bagan additional flexibility in the final third, while his aerial presence offers the side another route to goal from crosses and dead-ball situations.
