Argentina captain Lionel Messi has named three favorites for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022. Messi believes Brazil, France and England will enter the competition a little bit ahead of others. Brazil, France, and England have potent squads and they can go all the way.
Brazil has always been a favorite at the quadrennial event and they have won the coveted trophy on five occasions, the most by any team. France is the defending champion and they have won it twice whereas England had qualified for the finals of Euros 2020 and won the World Cup once.
“Whenever we talk about candidates, we always talk about the same teams,” Messi said in an interview with the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).
“If I have to put some above others I think Brazil, France, and England are a little bit above the rest. But the World Cup is so difficult and so complicated that anything can happen.”
Meanwhile, Messi and co. will begin their FIFA World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22. Subsequently, they will take on Mexico and Poland in Group C of the tournament.
Messi is excited about the upcoming tournament and revealed that the players are looking forward to giving their best. The Argentine added that they would aim to get off to a good start in the competition.
“We are very excited. We have a very good group that is enthusiastic, but we are taking things little by little,” said the 35-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward.
“We hope to start the World Cup in the best way to face everything that comes after. The more you play and the more time you spend on the pitch, the more you get to know each other,” he added.
Meanwhile, Argentina has been in sublime form as they have been unbeaten in their last 35 matches. Argentina last won the FIFA World Cup back in 1986 and it will be interesting to note if they would be able to go all the way in the quadrennial event.
Messi had earlier confirmed that this World Cup will be the last of his career.
