Liverpool’s head coach Andoni Iraola showered praise on Dominik Szoboszlai for scoring a ‘worldie’ in the Tottenham win. The Reds registered a 3-1 win against the Lilywhites in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
The Hungary international came off the bench and scored a stunning goal in the 91st minute to put the game to bed. With this win, Liverpool qualified for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Earlier, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo also found the back of the net for Liverpool, whereas Conor Gallagher scored for Tottenham Hotspur.
“The three goals we scored were very good goals,” Iraola said in his post-match news conference. “The origin of the first and second goals are also very important for us but the third goal is a worldie, it is outstanding. The thing with Dom is that before shooting, you are trusting he might score.
“With another player you are thinking it’s maybe too far but with Dom everyone is thinking he might score.”
Iraola made 10 changes to the side after a goalless draw against Fulham at the weekend. The gaffer praised his young players for an impressive show against the Spurs.
“It’s true that I made a lot of changes but I think I needed to do it because we could see the other day that we lacked a bit of energy the other day and we needed fresh legs,” he said. “I am happy because all the players have given us intensity and aggressiveness.
“I think we have been good during lots of parts of the game. And also happy because we deserved to win the game and earned the right to be in the next round.
“I was happy for [the young players]. Different positions, different demands. But I think the best thing is they were dead when I subbed them.
“Trey [Nyoni] was cramping, Rio [Ngumoha] couldn’t have run a lot more. [James] McConnell the same. When this happens, it’s because you’ve given us what you’ve got. They have been very athletic, willingness to win their duels, making their presence felt. I was happy for them.”
Liverpool will next take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.
