Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named as the men’s player of the year by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA). Fernandes – who was named the Premier League Player of the Season in May – has won an FA Cup and a League Cup during his time at Old Trafford.

Fernandes provided 21 assists in the previous season, which is now a record in the Premier League. Moreover, he scored nine goals, helping United finish their season in third place.

Fernandes picked up the award at the PFA’s annual awards ceremony on Tuesday in Manchester, beating the likes of Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. The Portuguese becomes the first United player to win the award since Wayne Rooney in 2010.

“It is obviously a very proud moment,” Fernandes said. “They are the ones you go on the pitch against and it’s probably not easy to vote for someone you play against, so it is a very good moment.”

On the other hand, Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly was awarded the men’s young player of the year award.

“I had a great season. I’m very proud of the season I had,” O’Reilly said. “I won two trophies with my club and managed to play at the World Cup with my country. I’m over the moon how it turned out.”
