Manchester City’s boss Pep Guardiola is optimistic about midfielder Phil Foden’s return to form in the ongoing Premier League season. The 24-year-old had a phenomenal run in the previous season but he is yet to find his top form in this new edition.
The youngster has played three matches in the Premier League so far but he has neither scored nor assisted any goal. Foden had played an instrumental role in taking Manchester City to glory in the previous season as he had scored 19 goals and assisted eight more in 35 matches for the Cityzens.
Foden scored 28 goals for club and country in all competitions and was named PFA Player of the Year in the previous season.
“Maybe I can have some doubts in many things, but Phil Foden is going to be back! As much as he feels good, he will be back,” Guardiola told reporters.
“I think in 30 minutes at St James’ Park [in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Saturday], I felt already something that I like that I didn’t see for example against Watford.”
The Spaniard added Foden didn’t train for more than two months after the conclusion of Euro due to injury woes.
“Don’t forget after the Euros he didn’t have any training for two months, he had problems with some niggles and some problems in his health,” Guardiola said. “But now he is smiling and he’s in his rhythm.
“He was the best player in the Premier League last season so we need him, he was important for us, but I have no doubts with his love for football and his training and passion, he will be back.”
After a goalless draw against Inter Milan at home in the Champions League, the Sky Blues will take on Bratislava. Guardiola expects a tough competition and doesn’t want to be complacent against the Slovakian club.
“I have incredible respect for all the teams in the Champions League, especially when you play away,” Guardiola said. “Hopefully we can be aggressive and take the result that we need.
“I have learned [in my career] that nothing is for granted. Nothing comes for free.”
