Manchester United have no intention of selling captain Bruno Fernandes before next month’s transfer deadline, despite reported interest from several major European clubs.
Galatasaray, Juventus and AC Milan have all been considering moves for the Portugal international. Galatasaray were thought to be preparing a proposal that could eventually have been worth 50 million euros (£42.7m).
However, senior figures at Old Trafford have made it clear that any attempt to sign the 31-year-old would be unsuccessful. United’s position is that Fernandes is not for sale at any price.
Club sources say no formal bids have been received so far.
The firm stance represents a change from last summer, when Fernandes attracted a huge offer from Saudi Pro-League side Al-Hilal. United told their captain at the time that the decision over whether to accept the move was his. Fernandes subsequently admitted that he felt “hurt” by the club’s approach.
This time, United appear determined to remove any uncertainty surrounding his immediate future.
Fernandes has one year remaining on his current contract, while United have the option to extend it by another season. The midfielder is also understood to prefer staying at Old Trafford.
A £57m release clause contained in his contract has expired, further strengthening United’s position in any potential negotiations. However, the two sides have yet to reach an agreement over a contract extension.
The importance of Fernandes to United was underlined by the reception he received from supporters in Dublin during last week’s pre-season meeting with Leeds. The response also highlighted the potential backlash the club could face if fans believed United were not doing everything possible to retain one of their most influential players.
Fernandes’ performances last season have only increased his value to the team. He registered 21 assists in the Premier League, setting a competition record.
The United captain is also the favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award for the 2025-26 season, with the winner due to be crowned in Manchester next week.
With the transfer deadline approaching and European clubs monitoring the situation, United’s message is emphatic: Fernandes remains central to their plans and interested clubs should not expect negotiations to begin.
