Real Madrid’s newest signing, Franco Mastantuono, celebrated his 18th birthday with an official presentation at the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday, where he spoke warmly of his new teammate Jude Bellingham but named compatriot Lionel Messi as the best player in the world.
The Argentine forward joined Los Blancos in a high-profile move from River Plate worth over €40 million, signing a six-year contract.
Mastantuono revealed that England international Bellingham made an immediate impression on him during their first meeting.
However, his declaration of Messi as the world’s best may raise eyebrows among some Madrid fans, given the Argentine’s legendary status at rivals Barcelona.
The highly-rated attacker has been registered with Real Madrid Castilla, ensuring he can gain match time in Spain’s lower divisions while awaiting a first-team opportunity.
Wearing the No. 30 shirt, Mastantuono is expected to be integrated gradually into Xabi Alonso’s plans. The Madrid head coach played a key role in securing his signature, personally calling the youngster to persuade him to reject strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain.
When asked about his football idols, Mastantuono said he had “many role models” and praised the quality and history of Madrid’s squad. Yet, when pressed to name the best in the world, his answer was unequivocal: “For me, it’s Messi. I’m Argentine, and for me, he’s the best.” The comment underscores the lasting influence of the Inter Miami star, who remains an icon in his homeland.
Mastantuono arrives in Spain with a growing reputation as one of South America’s brightest young talents. His performances for River Plate caught the eye of several European giants, but Real Madrid’s determination and structured payment deal, spread over installments, proved decisive in the race for his signature.
The teenager could make his competitive debut for Real Madrid as soon as August 19, when the Spanish champions host Osasuna in their La Liga season opener.
