Mohun Bagan Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Punjab FC Clash

Mohun Bagan Super Giant has been dealt another blow as winger Ashique Kuruniyan sustained a leg injury during practice on Monday, raising concerns over his availability for the Indian Super League (ISL) encounter against Punjab FC on December 26.

This setback adds to a growing list of fitness challenges for the Mariners as they aim to maintain their top position on the league table.

Kuruniyan, who spent most of last season sidelined with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury, only returned to action in October. He featured briefly in his team’s 3-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting and has started just one match this season, against NorthEast United earlier this month. The timeline for his recovery remains unclear, according to sources.

Meanwhile, head coach Jose Molina faces additional selection headaches as forward Dimitrios Petratos and midfielder Greg Stewart are also in doubt for the Punjab clash. Petratos, who experienced discomfort after the team’s recent 1-2 loss to FC Goa, is expected to miss at least a week of action.

This not only rules him out of the Punjab match but also casts uncertainty over his availability for the crucial home fixture against Hyderabad FC on January 2.

Greg Stewart, a key playmaker for Mohun Bagan this season, has also been grappling with recurring injuries. The former ISL Cup and Shield winner has contributed significantly with five assists and a goal in eight matches but has seen limited action since November.

Stewart did not participate in first-team training on Monday, focusing instead on rehabilitation. Molina has stated that a decision on his inclusion will only be made after Tuesday’s training session.

The absence of both Stewart and Petratos, pivotal as foreign No. 10s, may force Molina to alter his tactical setup. Possible adjustments include pushing Sahal Abdul Samad into a more advanced position or utilizing Anirudh Thapa as an attacking midfielder.

Despite the mounting injury concerns, Mohun Bagan remains atop the table with 26 points from 12 matches. However, the injuries could give Punjab FC an opportunity to capitalise and secure a top-six finish in what will be their final match of 2024.

Molina and his squad will be under pressure to overcome these challenges as the league leaders look to end the year on a high note despite the odds stacked against them.
