Mohun Bagan Super Giant showed their dominance in the Indian Super League (ISL) with a commanding 3-0 victory over Hyderabad FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday. The win not only solidified Mohun Bagan’s position atop the standings but also summed up the struggles of Hyderabad FC, who remain at the bottom of the table.
The match took a disastrous turn for Hyderabad in just the ninth minute. A defensive mishap saw goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh’s clearance ricochet off teammate Stefan Sapic and into their own net, handing Mohun Bagan an early lead.
Things nearly got worse for Hyderabad shortly after when Jamie Maclaren’s shot struck the post. However, Mohun Bagan doubled their lead before halftime. In the 41st minute, Tom Aldred capitalized on a pinpoint cross from Liston Colaco, heading the ball into the net.
Mohun Bagan wasted no time in putting the game beyond Hyderabad’s reach early in the second half. Jason Cummings scored a brilliant goal in the 51st minute, combining with Maclaren in a fluid one-two play that dismantled Hyderabad’s defense. Cummings capped the move with a stunning strike into the top corner, leaving the opposition helpless.
While Maclaren and Cummings stole the show, Liston Colaco also delivered a stellar performance, creating multiple chances with his pace and precision. However, his inability to finish some opportunities kept him off the scoresheet.
With the victory, Mohun Bagan extended their lead at the top of the table with 32 points from 14 matches, five points clear of second-placed Bengaluru FC, who have played one match less. The team’s balanced attack and defensive solidity have made them the team to beat this season.
For Hyderabad FC, the loss marked their 10th defeat of the season, leaving them with just eight points from 14 matches. The team’s lack of cohesion and defensive frailties were on full display, and they now face an uphill battle to salvage their campaign.
As Mohun Bagan march closer to the playoffs, their form suggests they are strong contenders for the title. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC will need a dramatic turnaround to avoid finishing at the bottom of the standings.
