Mumbai City FC, the reigning champions of the Indian Super League (ISL), have officially named Lallianzuala Chhangte as their captain for the upcoming 2024-25 season. This announcement marks a significant milestone in Chhangte’s career, reflecting his invaluable contributions and leadership on and off the pitch since joining the club in January 2022.
Chhangte’s tenure with the Islanders has been nothing short of remarkable. In 79 appearances, the 26-year-old winger has scored 29 goals and provided 16 assists, establishing himself as one of the league’s most consistent and dangerous attacking players. His ability to deliver in crucial moments has been pivotal to Mumbai City FC’s success over the past two seasons.
In the 2023-24 ISL season, Chhangte continued to show his exceptional talent, replicating his previous season’s success with a combined 16 goal contributions, comprising 10 goals and 6 assists. This feat made him the first Indian player in ISL history to achieve more than 15 goal contributions in consecutive seasons.
Chhangte’s influence has been instrumental in Mumbai City FC’s recent triumphs. He played a key role in the team’s 2022-23 ISL League Winners’ Shield victory, a campaign where his offensive prowess was on full display. His ability to score and assist in critical moments also proved decisive in helping the Islanders secure the ISL Cup in the following season.
As the new captain, Chhangte is expected to lead by example, continuing to inspire his teammates with his work ethic, professionalism, and commitment to the club’s goals. His elevation to captaincy reflects not just his on-field performances but also his growing stature as a leader within the squad.
Speaking on his new role, Chhangte expressed his pride and determination to lead Mumbai City FC to further success. “It’s an incredible honor to be named captain of this great club,” Chhangte said.
“I’ve always given my best for Mumbai City, and now, with this added responsibility, I’m even more motivated to bring out the best in myself and the team. We’ve achieved a lot together, but there’s always room for more, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
Mumbai City FC’s head coach, Des Buckingham, also praised Chhangte’s appointment, highlighting the forward’s impact since joining the club.
“Chhangte has been a crucial part of our team’s success over the past few years,” Buckingham said. “His performances speak for themselves, but it’s his leadership qualities and the respect he commands within the dressing room that make him the ideal choice as captain. I have full confidence in his ability to lead this team to new heights.”
Chhangte’s captaincy comes at a time when Mumbai City FC is looking to build on its recent successes and maintain its position as a dominant force in Indian football. With the new season on the horizon, all eyes will be on the Islanders as they embark on another campaign with their newly appointed leader at the helm.
As Mumbai City FC prepares for the challenges ahead, Chhangte’s leadership will undoubtedly play a crucial role in guiding the team through what promises to be another competitive ISL season. Fans of the club will be eager to see how their new captain leads the charge as the Islanders aim to add more silverware to their already impressive collection.
