Former Indian Super League champions, Mumbai City have announced the signing of last season’s Golden Ball winner Greg Stewart. The Scottish versatile attacker was the difference maker for Jamshedpur FC as he guided the Men of Steel to their maiden ISL League Winner’s Shield. However now he will ply his trade for the Islanders having signed a two year contract which will keep him at the club at the end of 2024.
Stewart started his career with Rangers youth team and that’s where his football journey started. He then moved out to join Heart of Midlothian’s youth setup to develop his skills. He finally went onto join a senior team as he made his debut for Cowdenbeath. He spent four years at the club and became a much better player. After his initial years he made his first big move in 2014 when he joined Dundee United.
The move to Dundee United changed his career totally as his exceptional performances meant he was named as the PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year award twice in row in 2015 and 2016. He then moved out to England joining Birmingham City from where he was loaned back to Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. He was with Birmingham for three seasons but in 2019 he joined Rangers. He instantly became a very integral part of Steven Gerrard’s men. He was a important part of the Rangers team that went on to win the Premiership in the 2020-21 season.
He was the centre of everything at Jamshedpur FC especially in attack. He developed a great relationship with Daniel Chima and together they scored some very crucial goals for the Men of Steel last season which resulted in them winning the Shield. It was also Stewart’s first time out of the United Kingdom and it gave him confidence and now he will look to continue the same thing with Mumbai City. Stewart netted 10 goals and also provided 10 assists and was a huge part of Jamshedpur FC’s success last season.
The Scotsman was delighted to join Mumbai City FC as he hopes that he can take the club forward in terms of success. “I’m delighted to be here at Mumbai City. The club outlined their plans and their ambitions right from the outset and I believe joining Mumbai City is the right step forward to continue my journey in India. The club and the coach Des Buckingham intend to build on what was an momentous season for Mumbai City last time out, including a strong performance in the AFC Champions League, and I believe we can add to the success the club has enjoyed in the recent past,” He said after putting pen to paper.
Mumbai City FC head coach Des Buckingham was also very happy to have secured Stewart. He believes that the Scotsman can play in different positions which increases the versatility level in his system. So it will surely be interesting to see how things work out for Stewart in the upcoming season.
