Neymar has confirmed his retirement from International football after earlier revealing he had played his last game for Brazil at the World Cup. The 34-year-old scored a consolation goal for the five-time champions from a spot kick in the stoppage time after his team was trailing by 2-0 against Norway in the round of 16 clash at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Neymar has struggled with his fitness due to injury woes and could not play consistently for the national team.

Neymar’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos Sr., had earlier urged his son to “keep playing” and find joy in representing the national team.

Neymar made his debut for Brazil against the United States in a friendly at MetLife Stadium in August 2010, scoring his first international goal.

He will end his international career as Brazil’s all-time highest goal scorer with 80 goals, three more than legendary Pelé.

Speaking after coming on as a substitute in Santos’ 4-2 triumph over after Venezuela’s Universidad Central in Tuesday’s Copa Sudamericana ​match, Neymar told reporters: “I think my time with the ⁠national team has already passed. I made history there, ​and I’m very happy about it.

“I experienced a lot ​there, gave my blood and my life, and always fought and battled for the yellow jersey. But I don’t think I want anymore.”

Brazil will play three International friendlies in September and head coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed they would try out new players.

“We’re going to start putting together a new squad, scouting and trialling young players, but without letting go of some of the players who were with us at the World Cup and who still have a lot to offer the national team,” Ancelotti told the CBF.
