NorthEast United Seals Playoff Spot with Dominant 3-0 Victory over Chennaiyin FC

NorthEast United’s stunning 3-0 win over Chennaiyin FC (CFC) on Saturday was not just a result; it was a statement. A year after being eliminated from the playoffs by a heartbreaking last-minute defeat to CFC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Highlanders turned the tables with a commanding performance to secure a spot in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 playoffs.

In their previous encounter at the same venue in April last year, NorthEast United had been eliminated from the playoff race by a dramatic 1-2 loss to CFC. As the visiting team trudged off the pitch amidst the jubilant home crowd, the emotion was clear: “Perhaps next time.” That “next time” arrived sooner than expected.

Alaaeddine Ajaraie, the league’s highest-ever goalscorer in a single season, played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring once and assisting twice to help propel NEUFC into the knockouts for the first time in four seasons. Suspended head coach Juan Pedro Benali, watching from the stands, was all smiles as his team sealed the crucial win.

From the outset, NEUFC was determined to assert control, with the first real opportunity coming within the first 40 seconds. Jithin MS set up Nestor Albiach, but his shot was off target. However, the Spaniard would soon redeem himself. In the 7th minute, Ajaraie’s quick thinking drew defenders towards him, allowing Albiach to strike from outside the box and put NEUFC ahead.

Chennaiyin FC, trailing early, fought back through Wilmar Jordan Gil and Conor Shields. However, their efforts were thwarted by NEUFC goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh, who produced key saves in the 10th and 14th minutes. NEUFC’s counter-pressing soon led to a second goal in the 26th minute. Mohammed Ali Bemmamer, returning from suspension, linked up with Jithin and Ajaraie to set up Jithin for a clinical finish.

The hosts struggled to regain control, with NEUFC constantly threatening. In the 38th minute, Ajaraie added a third, as Jithin’s cross was met by a deflected shot from the Moroccan striker, finding the back of the net.

Despite CFC’s attempts to turn things around, including a disallowed goal in the 78th minute and a red card for Ryan Edwards in the 80th minute, NEUFC held firm. With a solid defensive performance and relentless pressing, they managed to secure their first-ever clean sheet against Chennaiyin FC at home.

NEUFC’s 35 points from 23 matches ensured their place in the playoffs, while Chennaiyin FC’s season ended in disappointment with just 24 points, marking their elimination from the race. The Highlanders will now focus on their final league match against East Bengal on March 8, while CFC will look to finish their season on a high against Jamshedpur FC.

Match result:

Chennaiyin FC 0 lost to NorthEast United 3 (Albiach 7’, Jithin 26’, Ajaraie 38’)
