Punjab FC and NorthEast United FC played out a tightly contested 1-1 draw in their Indian Super League encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday. Despite moments of attacking promise from both sides, neither team could find a decisive breakthrough, leaving them to settle for a point each in front of a sparse crowd.
The first half produced little in terms of goals, though Punjab FC appeared the more dominant side with greater possession and attacking intent. Their attacking threat increased particularly after the 32nd minute when Muhammad Suhail entered the match as a substitute for the injured Nikhil Prabhu. The winger quickly made his presence felt with energetic runs down the left flank that troubled the NorthEast United defence.
Punjab’s best chance before the break came late in the half. In the 44th minute, Suhail displayed excellent footwork by dribbling past Redeem Tlang before delivering the ball into the penalty area for Daniel Ramirez. The Spanish forward found himself in a promising position inside the box, but the opportunity slipped away when he took one touch too many, allowing the defence to recover and deny the opening goal.
The match came alive in the second half as both teams pushed forward with greater urgency. Against the flow of play, NorthEast United struck first in the 60th minute. A fortunate ricochet off a Punjab defender saw the ball fall kindly to Parthib Gogoi. The forward reacted quickly, racing through on goal and calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead.
However, Punjab responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, the hosts found their equaliser through Nigerian striker Effiong Nsungusi. The move began with another impressive run from Suhail on the left wing. After driving into the penalty area, the winger delivered a precise cross that found Nsungusi, who produced a clever back-heel finish to guide the ball into the net.
The quick response restored balance to the match and kept Punjab firmly in contention. Suhail’s influence continued to stand out, with his pace and attacking drive creating problems for the NorthEast United defence throughout the game.
Despite both teams searching for a late winner in the closing stages, neither side could find the decisive goal. In the end, the contest finished level, with Punjab FC and NorthEast United FC each taking a point from an evenly fought battle.
