Punjab FC is set to re-sign their former captain Luka Majcen on a one-year deal, just months after his release following the conclusion of his contract last season. The agreement is expected to be officially announced soon, as per reports from Khel Now.
“Luka’s experience and leadership is invaluable to the club,” said a source to Khel Now.
“He knows the team and the league well, and the club is confident he’ll make an immediate impact,” he added.
Luka Majcen, who captained Punjab FC in their debut season in the Indian Super League (ISL), had an impressive individual performance despite the team failing to qualify for the playoffs. The Slovenian striker scored eight goals and provided two assists, demonstrating his skill and leadership on the field.
Majcen has been a significant figure in Indian football over the last four seasons, becoming only the third foreign player after Dudu Omagbemi and Katsumi Yusa to have played in the top three tiers of Indian football. The 35-year-old has a remarkable history with Punjab FC, having previously spent two successful seasons with the club.
In his first season, Majcen was instrumental in helping Punjab FC secure promotion to the ISL by scoring 16 goals and winning the I-League Golden Boot. His leadership was crucial to the team’s success, making him a mainstay in the squad.
Majcen’s return to Punjab FC marks the second overseas signing for the “Shers” after acquiring Filip Mrzljak. The club is undergoing a significant overhaul under new head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis, aiming to build a strong squad ahead of the Durand Cup and the 2024-25 campaign.
“The club has identified profiles required for the upcoming season. The club is set to complete the deals in the upcoming days,” the source informed.
Punjab FC’s strategy appears focused on blending experience with new talent to create a competitive team. Majcen’s re-signing is a testament to the club’s recognition of his value and the impact he can have both on and off the field. With his extensive experience in Indian football and previous success with the club, Majcen is expected to provide the leadership and goal-scoring prowess needed to drive Punjab FC’s ambitions forward.
As Punjab FC continues to finalize their roster, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team shapes up under Dilmperis’s guidance. Majcen’s return is not just a sentimental move but a strategic decision to bolster the team’s chances in the upcoming season.
