Indian Super League side Punjab FC announced the signing of experienced Serbian defender Lazar Cirkovic on Tuesday as they strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Cirkovic is already familiar with Indian football, having previously played for Chennaiyin FC and Jamshedpur FC. The defender helped both clubs reach the ISL play-offs during his spells with the teams.

The Serbian brings considerable experience from European football as well. He began his senior career with Serbian SuperLiga club Rad in 2010 before joining Partizan four years later.

Cirkovic made his official Partizan debut on the European stage, featuring in a UEFA Europa League match against Tottenham Hotspur. During four years at the Serbian club, he won two SuperLiga titles and one Serbian Cup.

His career later took him across Europe, with spells at Luzern in Switzerland, Maccabi Netanya in Israel, and Hungarian clubs Kisvárda and Honvéd.

At international level, Cirkovic represented Serbia at Under-21 level and was part of the country’s squad for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Speaking about his latest move, Cirkovic stressed his desire to contribute to the team’s success.

“I am joining Mumbai City with a winning mentality,” said Cirkovic. “For me, the most important thing is always the team. I want to be someone my teammates can rely on, both on and off the pitch, and help Mumbai City compete for the biggest honours.”

Mumbai City head coach Manolo Márquez also welcomed the Serbian defender and highlighted the qualities he can add to the squad.

“Lazar gives us experience, balance and strength. He is a player who understands his responsibilities, works hard for the team and brings good quality. His mentality and experience will be very valuable for our squad.”

Cirkovic’s familiarity with the ISL, combined with his experience across several European leagues, makes him an experienced addition ahead of the new campaign. His arrival comes as the club prepares for another season of Indian top-flight football.
