Punjab FC has bolstered its attacking lineup by signing Greek forward Petros Giakoumakis for the remainder of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season. The 32-year-old striker joins the club on a six-month contract, which runs until May.
Giakoumakis, born in Heraklion, Crete, brings a wealth of experience to Punjab FC. He began his professional journey with PO Atsaleniou in 2011, spending three seasons with the Greek Super Division side before signing with APO Levadiakos in 2014.
Over five seasons with Levadiakos, Giakoumakis made 117 appearances, becoming a key player for the team. Apart from a season on loan with Cyprus-based Olympiakos Nicosia, the forward has spent the majority of his career in Greece, most recently playing for Greek second-division side Makedonikos.
Speaking about the club’s latest acquisition, Punjab FC’s Technical Director, Nikolaos Topoliatis, expressed optimism about the impact Giakoumakis can have on the team. “Petros fits the profile of the striker we were looking for the remainder of the season. He is an experienced campaigner, and I hope that he can bring the quality to the field. I wish the player the best wishes for the season and hope he brings success for the club,” Topoliatis said.
Punjab FC is currently eighth in the ISL table with 18 points and is looking to climb the standings as the season progresses. The club will face NorthEast United in its next fixture tomorrow in Guwahati, where Giakoumakis could make his debut.
The signing is seen as a strategic move to add depth and experience to the team’s attacking options as they aim to improve their position in the league. Fans will be eager to see how the Greek forward adapts to the ISL and contributes to Punjab FC’s campaign in the remaining matches of the season.
