Punjab FC has bolstered its squad with the signing of Princeton Rebello, a midfielder known for his impressive performances in recent seasons. The Indian Super League (ISL) side announced the acquisition on Monday, bringing in the 23-year-old after his two-year stint with Odisha FC.
Rebello’s journey to professional football began in Betalbatim, Goa, where he first showed his potential with Velsao Pale Sports Club. His talent was recognized early, leading to a significant move to England in 2014 to join the U-15 team of Queens Park Rangers. This international experience was crucial in shaping his development and honing his skills.
By mid-2016, Rebello returned to India, signing with Vasco Sports Club in the Goa Professional League. His performances there caught the attention of FC Goa, leading to his inclusion in their development squad. His potential was further recognized by the Indian Arrows, who loaned him for the 2017-18 I-League season. Rebello’s performances with the Arrows earned him spots in the India U-18 and U-19 teams.
The 2018-19 season was pivotal for Rebello as he was promoted to FC Goa’s first team. That year, he was part of the squad that won the Super Cup. His subsequent season saw him make eight ISL appearances, contributing to FC Goa’s League Shield triumph. He also had the opportunity to feature in the AFC Champions League and was part of FC Goa’s Durand Cup victory in 2021.
Rebello’s role grew in prominence during the ISL 2020-21 season, where he established himself as a regular starter for FC Goa, helping guide the team to the semi-finals. His journey took another turn during the winter transfer window of the 2022-23 season when he moved to Odisha FC.
Although injuries and fitness issues limited his ISL appearances, Rebello made a significant impact in Odisha FC’s Super Cup campaign, playing a crucial role in their first-ever title win.
Under the new head coach Sergio Lobera, Rebello shone in the following season, making 20 league appearances, scoring one goal, and providing one assist. His contributions were vital in leading Odisha FC to their first-ever semi-final appearance. Additionally, he played a key role in the AFC Cup, where Odisha FC topped their group and advanced to the knockout stages.
Joining Punjab FC, Rebello brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. His versatility and ability to influence games from midfield will be a significant asset to his new team. Speaking about the move, Rebello expressed his excitement and readiness to contribute to Punjab FC’s ambitions.
The addition of Rebello is seen as a strategic move by Punjab FC as they aim to strengthen their squad and make a strong impact in the upcoming ISL season. With his background and accomplishments, Rebello is expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s midfield, bringing stability and creativity to their play.
