Punjab FC is set to bolster their squad with the acquisition of Ninthoinganba Meetei, the dynamic 22-year-old winger from Manipur, who previously played for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL). The club, also known as the Shers, will secure Ninthoi’s services on a free transfer, Khel Now has confirmed.
Ninthoi, as he is widely known, made 19 appearances for Chennaiyin FC in the recently concluded ISL season, contributing two goals and an assist. While these numbers might not seem extraordinary, they fail to fully encapsulate his influence on the pitch. His pace and dribbling skills were crucial in stretching opposition defenses, particularly in counter-attacking situations, a tactic effectively utilized by Chennaiyin FC’s head coach, Owen Coyle.
A source close to the deal informed Khel Now, “Punjab FC were looking to sign a winger, and Ninthoi’s profile was appreciated by the management. His eye-catching performances in the ISL made the club keen to bring him into the squad.”
Punjab FC, which finished eighth in their debut ISL campaign, only three points shy of a playoff spot, has focused this transfer window on addressing gaps and adding depth to their squad. The Shers have already made several strategic acquisitions.
They secured Princeton Rebello from Odisha FC on a two-year deal, brought in goalkeeper Muheet Khan from Real Kashmir, and Vinit Rai from Mumbai City FC. Additionally, Indian goalkeeper Ravi Kumar has extended his contract with the club.
The signing of Ninthoi Meetei is expected to complement these additions, offering Punjab FC an additional edge in attack. His ability to exploit spaces and deliver quick transitions could prove crucial as the team aims to improve their standings in the upcoming season.
Ninthoi’s move to Punjab FC represents a significant step in his career. Known for his exceptional speed and ability to beat defenders, he has been a standout player since his youth, having represented India at various age-group levels. His performances in the ISL have shown his potential to make a substantial impact, even when his statistical contributions might not always reflect his overall influence on the game.
Punjab FC’s management clearly sees Ninthoi as a player who can add a new dimension to their offensive play. His ability to stretch the play and create opportunities for his teammates will be a valuable asset as the Shers aim to build on their inaugural ISL campaign and push for a playoff spot next season.
The club’s strategic moves in the transfer market indicate a clear intent to strengthen the squad with a blend of experienced and young talent. Princeton Rebello, a versatile midfielder, and Vinit Rai, known for his composure and passing ability, are expected to provide stability in the midfield, while Muheet Khan’s addition enhances their goalkeeping options.
Ravi Kumar’s contract extension also highlights the club’s desire to retain experienced players who can provide leadership and continuity. Kumar’s presence will be vital in ensuring a solid defensive foundation as Punjab FC look to improve their defensive record from last season.
As the new season approaches, Punjab FC fans will be eagerly anticipating the impact of these new signings. Ninthoi Meetei’s arrival, in particular, is likely to generate significant excitement. If he can replicate his ISL form and adapt quickly to his new surroundings, he could play a pivotal role in Punjab FC’s quest for success in the 2024 season.
