Jamshedpur FC launched its Durand Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion with a commanding 5-0 victory over tournament debutant Defenders FC of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in a Group C clash at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday.
New signing Raynier Fernandes enjoyed a dream competitive debut, scoring a superb hat-trick to inspire the Indian Super League outfit to a dominant opening-day win. Aman C.K. and Devendra Dhaku Murgaokar also got on the scoresheet as the Red Miners controlled the contest from the opening whistle.
Jamshedpur needed just four minutes to break the deadlock. Sanan Mohammed sparked the move with an energetic run down the left before delivering a precise cross into the six-yard box. Fernandes timed his jump perfectly and powered a header into the near corner to hand his new side an early lead.
The advantage doubled only two minutes later after Lalhriatpuia Chawngthu’s dangerous delivery caused problems inside the box. Goalkeeper T.S. Priyashan managed only a partial clearance, allowing the loose ball to fall to Fernandes outside the area. The midfielder made no mistake, firing a powerful strike into the net to put Jamshedpur firmly in control.
The Red Miners continued to pile on the pressure and added a third in the 23rd minute. Aman C.K. raced onto a long diagonal pass from deep inside his own half, surged beyond the defence and calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Priyashan to cap a swift counter-attacking move.
Defenders FC’s difficult first half became even more challenging six minutes before the break when Devendra Dhaku Murgaokar’s attempted effort struck his own chest before looping towards goal. The unexpected deflection left Priyashan stranded as the ball trickled over the line, giving Jamshedpur a 4-0 lead at halftime.
The visitors showed greater determination after the interval and managed to frustrate Jamshedpur for long spells. Sankalpa produced a timely sliding challenge to deny Sanan Mohammed, while Priyashan responded with a pair of impressive saves to keep the scoreline from growing further.
However, Jamshedpur eventually sealed the rout eight minutes from time. Substitute Lawmsangzuala forced another save from Priyashan, but the goalkeeper could only parry the effort into the path of Fernandes. Reacting quickest inside the box, the midfielder calmly slotted home from close range to complete a memorable hat-trick and wrap up an outstanding debut performance as Jamshedpur opened its Durand Cup campaign in style.
