Reigning Indian Super League champions, Mumbai City finally announced their new signings of Mohammad Nawaz. The young custodian will directly replace their star goalkeeper, Amrinder Singh, who joined title rivals ATK Mohun Bagan. Nawaz has joined the Islanders in a three-year contract as head coach Sergio Lobera was a big fan of him even during their FC Goa days.
The 21-year-old was an AIFF Elite Academy youth product. He was later scouted by FC Goa back in 2018. Nawaz featured for their reserve side in the I-League second division and also in Goa Professional League. His consistent performances for the club saw him earn his debut for the Gaurs senior team during the 2018-19 season.
The young Manipuri custodian was instrumental in FC Goa’s triumphant 2018-19 season and 2019-20 seasons as they won the Super Cup and the League Winners’ Shield. He was probably one of the first names on the team sheet during Lobera’s reign in Goa. The 21-year-old registered as many as 33 clean sheets during his time at FC Goa. The Spanish tactician liked him the most because of his unique ability to play out from the back.
The young custodian also represented India at the 2016 BRICS U-17 tournament. He also made as many as 10 appearances for FC Goa in the 2020-21 season in their run to the playoffs.
Therefore as Nawaz reunited with his former boss Sergio Lobera at Mumbai City FC, the youngster was delighted to put pen to paper. He has also signed a long term deal which shows Lobera’s confidence in the Manipur born custodian.
“I would like to thank Mumbai City FC for showing faith in me and giving me the opportunity to play at a club that wants to win games and win trophies. I had a chance to speak to many of my friends who are now my teammates and they spoke highly of the great culture at the club. I’m looking forward to getting started on this exciting journey with my new family and achieve great things along the way,” the 21-year-old said after signing his contract with the Islanders.
Mumbai City are ready to defend their title for the upcoming season as they have retained Mourtada Fall and Ahmed Jahouh. Adding to their list of foreigners, the Islanders have roped in former ATK Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC midfielder Bradden Inman. The Brazilian duo of Cassio Gabriel and Igor Catatau have also joined the club. Lastly, ISL’s Golden Boot winner Igor Angulo has also joined the club.
