AS Roma has appointed Jose Mourinho as their head coach for the next season of 2021-2022. The team has signed Mourinho on a three-year contract, the Italian Serie A club announced on Tuesday. This contract will keep Mourinho at the club till 30 June, 2024.
The 58-year old, who is regarded as one of the best managers in the Football history, will replace Pablo Fonesca for the start of the new season. The club had earlier confirmed on Tuesday that Fonesca will leave the club at the end of the ongoing season.
Meanwhile, Mourinho was removed by Tottenhem Hotspurs on April 19 after a poor run in the second half of the season. Spurs slipped from the top of the standings to outside the Europeans places.
AS Roma took to their Twitter to share the news. The post read as, “The club is delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with Jose Mourinho for him to become our new head coach ahead of the 2021-22 season”.
“We are thrilled and delighted to welcome Jose Mourinho into the AS Roma family,” Roma president Dan Friedkin said in a statement.
“A great champion who has won trophies at every level, Jose will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project. The appointment of Jose is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.”
Mourinho said on his appointment, “After meetings with the ownership and (general manager) Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming year.”
Mourinho has the experience of coaching teams like Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United in the past and he will look to deliver the goods for AS Roma. Roma’s last Serie A title came back in 2001 whereas they won the Italian Cup in 2008 and thus Mourinho will look to turn the tables for the club.
