Former Goa FC coach Sergio Lobera has been confirmed to be Mumbai City FC’s manager for the upcoming season. Sergio Lobera helped Goa FC to the top of the log of the India Super League standing.
However, the Spaniard was not allowed to lead the team into the India Super League playoffs as he was sacked with three games still to be played in the league format.
Irrespective, he had won the super cup in 2019 with the team having led them to a runners-up finish in the 2018/2019 India Super League.
Despite being approached by Jamshedpur and Kerala Blasters, Lobera eventually pitched tents with Mumbai City FC has signed a three-year contract.
Furthermore, it is understood that the manager wishes to work with some of the players he had worked with, in some of his previous teams with Goa FC’s skipper Mandar Rao Desai turning down a three-year contract extension with the Gaurs to move in with Lobera at Mumbai.
“Mandar’s decision to join Mumbai is not about money. The difference in what Goa offered him and what he will be paid at Mumbai (both with three-year contracts) is not significant. It’s clear that he wants to continue his association with Lobera,” an official was quoted on TOI.
Mandar is Goa FC’s record appearance holder, and he made his 100th cap for the Gaurs when they faced Chennaiyin FC at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.
More Goa FC players are also rumored to likely follow Lobera to Mumbai with Senegalese defender Mourtada Fall as well as Moroccan defensive midfielder Ahmed Jahouh both rumored set to follow Mandar’s footsteps.
Sergio Lobera will hope to take Mumbai City FC to the Indian Super League playoffs next season after they finished fifth on the log in the 2019-20 season.
