Sreenidi Deccan FC produced a spirited display to defeat league leader Diamond Harbour FC 2-1 in an intense Indian Football League clash at the Kalyani Stadium on Sunday.
The result shakes up the title race as Sreenidi Deccan climbed to third place with 21 points, while Diamond Harbour, despite the defeat, held on to the top spot with 25 points.
The visitors struck twice late in the first half through Brandon Vanlalremdika and David Castaneda, making the most of a numerical advantage that came almost immediately in the match.
Diamond Harbour’s troubles began in the opening minute when Sunday Afolabi was shown a straight red card for a high and dangerous challenge on Ajay Chhetri. Reduced to 10 men early, the home side faced an uphill battle but still managed to control possession for large spells.
Despite their disadvantage, Diamond Harbour created several chances. Hugo Diaz came closest before halftime, only to be denied by a sharp save from goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh.
Sreenidi Deccan, however, capitalised on key moments. Brandon opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a superbly curled free-kick into the top corner after being fouled by Mikel Kortazar. The midfielder’s effort earned him the Player of the Match award.
Moments later, in first-half stoppage time, Castañeda doubled the lead with a powerful strike after driving into the box, catching the defence off guard.
Diamond Harbour came out stronger after the break and found a way back into the contest when a penalty was awarded following a handball by Hadi Idrissou. Díaz made no mistake from the spot, reducing the deficit and setting up a tense finish.
Head coach Kibu Vicuna attempted to inject fresh energy with multiple substitutions, and the hosts pushed relentlessly for an equaliser. Chances fell to players like Kevin Ademola and others, but they were unable to find the decisive touch.
In the closing stages, Sreenidi Deccan dropped deep, defending resolutely under sustained pressure. Kamaljit Singh played a crucial role, commanding his area and making key saves to preserve the lead.
Despite Diamond Harbour’s late surge, Sreenidi Deccan held firm to secure a vital victory, tightening the race near the top and underlining their credentials as serious contenders.
