Manchester United have completed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after activating the €41 million release clause in the Belgian midfielder’s contract.
The 29-year-old has signed a five-year agreement at Old Trafford, giving United an experienced Premier League midfielder as the club continues rebuilding its squad under manager Michael Carrick.
Tielemans arrives after three seasons with Aston Villa, where he developed into one of Unai Emery’s most important players. His ability to control possession, progress the ball and create chances from central areas made him a key part of Villa’s midfield.
He produced two goals and seven assists across 35 appearances last season and helped Aston Villa win the UEFA Europa League. His performances also contributed to Villa securing a place in the Premier League’s top four.
The move represents another significant addition to United’s midfield.
Manchester United had already completed a deal for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The club then shifted its focus toward Tielemans after a proposed move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson collapsed.
Tielemans offers a different profile from Santos.
The Belgian international is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and can operate as a deeper playmaker or in a more advanced midfield role. His passing range and experience should give Carrick another option when United need to control matches rather than rely exclusively on transitions.
His leadership will also be valuable.
Tielemans captained Belgium during its run to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, where the team was eliminated by Spain. He now returns to England ready to begin the next stage of a career that has already included spells with Anderlecht, Monaco, Leicester City and Aston Villa.
For Villa, losing Tielemans represents a significant setback.
The release clause prevented the club from demanding a larger fee for one of its most influential players. Villa had hoped to extend his contract beyond 2028, but United’s decision to activate the clause removed their control over the situation.
The transfer also gives Aston Villa additional funds to reshape the midfield. The club has already moved to replace Tielemans by pursuing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes.
Manchester United are still expected to explore additional midfield options before the transfer window closes.
Tielemans, however, gives the club a proven Premier League performer who can contribute immediately.
United have added experience, creativity and leadership to the center of the pitch. Tielemans now has the opportunity to become an important part of the club’s attempt to return to the top of English football.
